Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
/An interesting read. This was not an easy book to review without inadvertently sharing any spoilers, but I’ll be careful to keep the major plot twists under wraps. Set in North Carthage, the book begins with the disappearance of Amy Dunne on the day of her and Nick Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Nick begins to follow clues left to him as part of a scavenger hunt his wife had set up for him prior to her disappearance. Along with these clues, she also left a diary behind that doesn’t portray Nick in the best of light. But did he kill her? That is the question the reader is left to wrestle with.
At the beginning of the book, I was a bit turned off by the Nick’s character. As most readers do, I typically like to identify with the main characters I’m reading. But as I progressed through the pages, I began to wonder if perhaps this somewhat unlikeable character was serving the exact purpose the author intended. The pacing was great. Even with my hesitations, I read the book quickly and it was a page turner. The voice was unique. Observations were shared that took the narrative to a different place- good or bad- the verdict will probably vary from person to person. The ending? I wouldn’t classify it as my ideal, but it left me thinking (which I do like).
Overall, I felt it was worth the read.
