Frying Pan Farm Park (Herndon, VA)
/Frying Pan Farm Park is a great find in Northern Virginia located in the city of Herndon. The park consists of a working demonstration farm, a playground, visitor center, and country store.
The farm is by far our favorite part of this park. It is a lot of fun and there is no admissions fee (though donations are welcome). The farm is intended to mirror one of the family dairy farms from the 1920-1950s era. There is a barn with animals that are easily viewed in their stalls and a milking parlor. While at the park, you will encounter pigs, horses, cows, chickens, rabbits, ducks, peacocks, goats and sheep. There are often animals with newborns and our kids enjoy getting to see the new baby calves, piglets, and foals.
On the property is a smokehouse, an equipment shed (which contains both horse-drawn and mechanized equipment, including several working order early 1900 Fordson, John Deere and Farmall tractors) and a blacksmith shop as well. The farm also offers wagon rides for a fee. However, they operate on a predetermined schedule so you may want to call ahead). The wagon takes you around the farm and is a nice addition.
The visitor center offers information on the park and a map. There are also special events that take place in the center’s auditorium such as puppet shows, concerts, and story telling. Be warned these events tend to sell out before the event and it is best to purchase tickets early. I have attempted to call the day of or a few days prior to the event and there is usually a very long waiting list.
A playground is maintained on the property. It is situated in an open area with mulch surrounding the equipment. There is no shelter over the playground so you may get hot during the warmest summer months.
Become a “Friend of Frying Pan Park” and you will receive regular emails when there are new births on the farm (in addition to updates on upcoming events). There is no fee to become a member and the park uses the “friends” list to generate support and interest in the community. Plus, you can turn your computer screen towards the kids if you want to share the newborn pics that are sent. Just be prepared, after viewing the adorable pictures mine are always ready to go see them in person!
